Project Description

This study presents a brief overview of On-Orbit Servicing (OOS), the challenges it faces in its development, the unique position a technology prize has in overcoming these barriers, and a conceptual framework for a collaborative OOS Prize. The OOS Prize proposed is based around the following points: develop OOS incrementally by focusing on near-term applications, use proven technologies or developed technologies, demonstrate a commercially viable service, and involve all relevant stakeholders at some level. The study revealed that there is no current technological infeasibility with OOS and the lack of development is the result of uncertainty on the impacts of OOS capabilities on current operating methods. A technology prize for the development of a financially sustainable commercial OOS capability is one potential solution to this problem.
